This report presents the findings of a comparative study on attracting and supporting international academics – PhD students, lecturers, and researchers – in ten host countries located in Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia). It provides some novel insights into this understudied topic in the target region. The study was conducted under the EU-funded UniWeliS project in order to explore national and institutional agendas for attracting and supporting global talent in the target region; to investigate international academics’ needs in terms of tailored assistance and their satisfaction with such services; and to elaborate recommendations for higher education institutions, policymakers and funders.

This report is one output of many through the UniWeliS project, which analysed the development of welcome services and professional capacities to support mid-term and long-term mobility of international PhD students and academics in the Central-Eastern and South-Eastern European (CESE) region.
