Since Switzerland has four official languages (German, French, Italian and Romansch), choosing one of them for learning is a difficult choice and usually depends on the canton (province) in which a researcher is residing. In case (s)he gets an appointment at a university or company in a canton with different official language, the entire process often needs to re-start.
However, it is positive that many academic activities can be conducted in English. Linguistic skills have larger importance in working in companies, especially more traditional ones, while branches of multinational companies are generally more prone to use English as their working language.
General information on language training opportunities is available here.
Many universities offer language courses, e.g. ETH Zurich.
