The shifting economic and political dynamics have been fuelling a growing sense of uncertainty surrounding international student mobility in some countries. On the one hand, Europe’s imperative for a highly-skilled workforce to drive its twin transition toward a greener and more digital future, as well as its pursuit of continued innovation, underscores the importance of attracting and welcoming international students. Student exchanges also lie at the very heart of European integration and its open, democratic and fair societies. On the other hand, economic pressures and diminishing public funding for higher education in some countries have exacerbated cost awareness and the overall capacity to offer quality education services to both domestic and international students. Furthermore, Europe’s openness to the world has been strained due to a lack of trust in some instances and the new limitations of the knowledge security agenda. 

This one-day event aims to explore socioeconomic, political, cultural, and other costs and benefits of European and international student mobility for individuals, higher education institutions, and countries, by taking stock of national policies and initiatives and debates. It will also share good examples of how international degree and credit mobility can be leveraged for socioeconomic transformations and economic growth in different countries across Europe, while reflecting on ways to further amplify its multiple impacts in the future.
