Germany’s most comprehensive account of internationalisation in higher education, providing the latest Facts and Figures on the International Nature of Study and Research in Germany and abroad has just been published in English by DAAD and the DZHW.
The Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2021 focuses on foreign students studying in Germany, but also on German students abroad and on foreign researchers in Germany and German researchers elsewhere in the world. This publication is complemented by the Wissenschaft Weltoffen Kompakt 2021, a brochure format highlighting the key findings of the main annual report, which was also published in English last month.
The report – as of this year – also provides certain spotlights exploring key issues in more depth. Notably this year’s report addresses bibliometric measurements of international researcher mobility, the development of the number of international students in Germany in 2020, German students’ international mobility under Covid-19 and funding for the international mobility of academics and researchers.
This year’s report acknowledges the impact Covid-19 has had on international student mobility in Germany but highlights that there was no decline in the overall number of international students in Germany, either in the 2020 summer semester or in the 2020/21 winter semester, with both these number slightly rising. Severe declines were however identified, in the numbers of international first-year students, which fell by 41% in the summer semester and 19% in the winter semester.
