As first foreign HEI with the status of a national university in Vietnam, the Vietnamese German University in Ho Chi Minh City (VGU) officially opened its gates in autumn 2008. The VGU is to become a model research university with the aspiration for excellency in the region of South-East Asia. Training at VGU will start the coming semester, September 2009.

In February 2009, a supporting consortium of more than 30 German universities was established, among them some of Germany’s top universities in the fields of engineering, technology and natural sciences. The consortium forms the platform for research and mainly post graduate teaching at VGU. Its activities and offers will be jointly financed and organised by the German government and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
