Universities Wales adopts strategy to strengthen Wales’ research competitiveness

On the 6th of October Universities Wales announced that it will implement the recommendations of a new study into the region’s research competitiveness.  The report highlights the potential for a significant loss of revenue with the Welsh higher education sector following the formal depature of the UK from the EU in January 2021.  At the heart of the issue is the reliance of Welsh universities on the European Structural and Investment Funds to support research activity. This differs from the experience of England, where a far larger portion of research sector income stems from Horizon 2020.  The report examines possible strategies towards identifiying sustainable solutions for Wales, highlighing approaches to strengthen the international competitiveness of Welsh universities.
