UNESCO appoints new Assistant Director-General for Education

Nicholas Burnett was appointed UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education on 5 September. An economist with extensive experience in the fields of education and human development, he has been the director of the UNESCO’s EFA (Education for All) Global Monitoring Report since October 2004 and has held several positions in the World Bank from 1983 to 2000.

UNESCO focuses on five thematic fields, education being one of them. The Assistant Director-General for Education, who serves under the authority of the UNESCO Director-General, thus holds the highest position in the education sector and is responsible for the overall formulation, planning and coordination of UNESCO’s strategy, programmes and plans of action in this field.
