Turning the tables: Dubai to open branch campuses in India

The HCT, the Association of Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, announced its plan to reinforce international education by setting up its first overseas campus in Bangalore, India early next year. According to Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the HCT, this step is part of the strategy for growth and success in the global economy. HCT’s envisages more branch campuses on Indian soil within the next five years.

As the Gulf states have recently been major importers of transnational education (off-shore campuses, twining and franchise agreements), the opening of this new campus now puts the UAE in the same league as the main education export countries, such as the UK, the US and Australia. These  major players in transnational education also have great stakes in the Indian higher education market and should be watching this new development.
