Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023

On 12 October 2022, Times Higher Education (THE) announced the World University Rankings for 2023, a ranking list of top world universities, based on 13 key performance indicators, measuring universities’ performance in 4 areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Despite still being dominated by American and British Institutions, this year’s results continue to showcase a gradual increase in Asian Universities’ presence, with 19 institutions from the continent ranked in the top 100 list, from a total of 12 institutions in 2020’s list: 7 universities from China, 5 from Hong Kong, 3 from South Korea, 2 from Japan and Singapore.

European universities on the other hand, seem to retain their positions with only minor changes from last year. In this respect, ETH Zurich performs the best (11), followed by Technical University of Munich (30) and LDU Munich (33). Overall, we see that 26 European Universities make their way into the top 100 list, among which 9 are from Germany, 7 from the Netherlands, 4 from France and Switzerland (respectively) and lastly 1 from Belgium and Sweden each. On the other hand, five countries enter the ranking for the first time-- all of them in Africa (Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mauritius).
