Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE) is for certain in the 'relect' club of well-known, widely-used and highly-recognised global academic rankings. Interesting news came now from THE front -a brand new cooperation with Thomson Reuters, a globally recognised leading research metric company.
Thomson Reuters has recently launched a program called ‘Global Institutional Profiles Project’, aiming to build a solid, comprehensive, transparent and demonstrable database profiling the most significant universities and research-based institutions in the world. The dataset will comprise peer review, scholarly outputs, citation patterns, funding levels and faculty characteristics. According to the company, the new resource will provide a “more sophisticated and balanced picture of the top 200 universities than anything previously available”.
The next THE World University Ranking making use of this tool will be published in autumn, with separate rankings by subject areas. It is to be seen how satisfied the wider public will be with the new results and if the academic world will eventually feel the difference this dataset may bring to their “business”.
