The production of living knowledge: The crisis of the university and the transformation of labor in Europe and North America

Roggero, G. The production of living knowledge: The crisis of the university and the transformation of labor in Europe and North America. Temple University Press, Philadelphia, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-4399-0573-9. Pages: 214.

The first English-language edition of this book by Gigi Roggero is published just when a new surge of student struggles is growing in strength around the world, particularly in Europe, the United States and Latin America. Indeed, the book purposefully situates the “crisis of the university” in the context of the profound challenges faced by the contemporary global economy. The findings are based on extensive fieldwork carried out through an investigative and analytical approach known as conricerca, or “co-research”, whereby researchers are also subjects. Working from the perspective of labour-capital relations, the author views the “global university” as a workplace and “cognitive capitalism", which is evolving on the basis of knowledge production, as a form of contemporary global capital.
