This publication is a special issue of the journal Higher Education edited by John Brennan and Ulrich Teichler of INCHER Kassel. It features five main and one concluding articles, which address scientific questions of long-term strategic concern to the future of higher education.

The special edition draws on the results of the “Higher Education Looking Forward“ (HELF) project, which was carried out between 2006 and 2008 and which aimed at developing future scenarios of developments in higher education that might help to identify priorities for higher education research. The project was coordinated by John Brennan (London) and supported by the European Science Foundation.
