The publication contains articles from a broad range of experts who participated in a conference sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundations and held in Stockholm on 9-10 November, 2005. It analyses recent trends in the professional development of scholars: for example, changes in scholars’ formative stages, in the employment practices, in the specialisation, and the increasing international mobility. The book departs from focal points of the Stockholm conference, such as:

• interaction between gain of competences and productive research work,
• opportunities and constraints of study and job conditions, and
