The European Digital Education Hub (EDEH), supported by the Erasmus+ programme and managed by a consortium led by the DAAD Brussels office, with ACA as an associated partner, is dedicated to enhancing digital education through collaboration and the sharing of best practices. Earlier this year, Angeliki Psychogyiou, ACA Policy and Project Coordinator, led one of EDEH’s working groups (squad) focused on improving the environmental impact of digital education (for more details, see ACA Newsletter – Education Europe, February 2024).
A key output from this working group is the report ‘’Sustainability in Online Education’’, which presents the collective efforts of the EDEH squad on sustainability. This report provides practical insights and tools for educators and administrators, including a checklist designed to facilitate the adoption of sustainable practices in digital education. The document also highlights the environmental impact of digital technologies and proposes solutions for a more sustainable approach to education delivery and operations.
Complementing this, Angeliki Psychogyiou also authored a short informative paper entitled “Sustainability Through a Digital Lens”, which offers a focused analysis of the intersection between sustainability and digitalisation within the Erasmus+ programme. The paper explores innovative approaches, such as blended and virtual mobility, and examines the role of digital tools in advancing sustainability. By addressing challenges like digital pollution and e-waste, it advocates for balanced strategies that align with the European Green Deal and the Digital Education Action Plan.
Both contributions build on the momentum generated at the EDEH workshop on the same topic held earlier this year in Paris, which underscored the importance of collective action in tackling environmental challenges through digital education.
