A recent study by the German Economic Institute (IW), commissioned by the DAAD, underscores the growing importance of international experience for university graduates in Germany. As companies navigate major economic transformations—driven by demographic shifts, digitalisation, and decarbonisation—graduates with global exposure are increasingly valued. The study, based on a survey of 823 companies, found that international experience plays a crucial role in recruitment, especially for innovative and internationally operating firms. Beyond technical qualifications, companies particularly appreciate graduates with independence, problem-solving skills, conscientiousness, and openness to new ideas.
The study’s findings align with broader trends in the global job market, where intercultural competence is becoming a key factor in business success. Companies believe that experience abroad enhances understanding of different work cultures and improves the ability to manage multinational teams. The DAAD has long emphasised these benefits, with its Erasmus+ programme fostering mobility among students. Moreover, the study dispels concerns that time spent abroad could hinder career prospects; in fact, innovative companies often prioritise candidates with international experience over those who complete their degrees quickly. This shift reflects a recognition that global skills are vital for leadership roles.
Looking ahead, the DAAD supports strengthening programmes like Erasmus+ to equip students with essential skills for the modern workforce. As global competition intensifies, international mobility will remain a key driver of innovation and business success in Germany. The study’s results highlight the need for universities and policymakers to encourage students to seize these opportunities without fearing negative career implications.
