Bergan, S. and van't Land, H. Speaking across borders: The role of higher education in furthering intercultural dialogue (Council of Europe Higher Education Series No.16). Council of Europe and International Association of Universities (IAU). 2010. ISBN: 978-92-871-6941-9. Pages: 197.
The authors of this volume reflect on the role of higher education in building and maintaining intercultural dialogue in a humane society. With the help of contributions from colleagues in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America, the book presents a number of examples of practice in conflict areas where higher education institutions have played a fundamental role in fostering intercultural dialogue, and by extension, contributed to conflict management and conflict resolution. The examples from different countries raise key questions about universities’ willingness and ability to engage in this kind of activity, which often implies taking a leadership role and some form of responsibility in complex situations. This edition builds on the Council of Europe’s Higher Education Series No.11 and related issues treated in the IAU journal Higher Education Policy.
