South America: Towards the creation of a common space for higher education?

Brazil and Argentina are making the first steps towards the creation of a Mercosur University. The ministers of education of the two countries signed a cooperation agreement in July which marks the start of the creation of a Mercosur higher education network, with the overall aim to:

  • promote cross-country mobility of academic staff, researchers and students
  • achieve credits and diploma recognition
  • develop a curriculum focused on issues related to regional integration.

The initial phase of this concept foresees the establishment of a higher education institutions network in the border regions of Brazil and Argentina. The next step would be to transfer the idea to Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
