Slovakia signs agreement with China on recognition of previous education

On 4 June 2019, the Education Minister of Slovakia approved an agreement with China on mutual recognition of university diplomas, school certificates and academic titles. The agreed text will be then signed by both parties under the rules for concluding international treaties. The Proposal for the conclusion of an Agreement between the Government of the Slovak Republic and the Government of the People's Republic of China on Mutual Recognition of University Diplomas, Certificates and Academic Titles aims at simplifying academic recognition and enabling students to pursue their studies in one of the two countries.

The agreement also defines the requirements that Chinese students must meet for admission to Slovak universities and vice-versa. It describes the individual higher education diplomas and certificates that students can obtain in Slovakia and China and it provides a comparison between the two higher education systems and academic degrees (in an annexed table to the document). The conclusion of the agreement was initiated by the Chinese side with the aim to develop cooperation in the fields of education, science and research as well as to promote the mobility of talents between the two countries.
