Part of an initiative to improve
public awareness of science among European citizens, the European Commission’s DG Research has launched a call for proposals aimed at assessing
how citizens perceive science and research programmes advertised in the media. The call comes from the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) under the Science in Society rubric and supports a new audiovisual policy in DG Research. Bidders are expected to propose a research model for gathering and analysing data on if the public approves, disapproves, likes, or is adverse to current audiovisual science programmes. Subjects should be broken down categorically according to nationality, age, socio-economic background, etc. Ultimately, the Commission is interested in identifying
creative format and content in the media that will attract more people to science programmes and perhaps attract young people to scientific careers.
