Review of Philanthropy in UK Higher Education: 2012 status report and challenges for the next decade

Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Review of Philanthropy in UK Higher Education: 2012 status report and challenges for the next decade. Author, Bristol, 2012. Pages: 65.

This review, commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), assesses the state of play of philanthropic support for higher education in the United Kingdom (UK). It focuses on the evolution in fundraising for the last ten years and how universities have changed the way they manage philanthropy. In addition, this report presents challenges for the future and provides recommendations for donors, institutions and the government. Drawing a positive picture regarding the evolution of fundraising in higher education (e.g. in the last five years funds raised have increased from GBP 513 million to GBP 693 million), the report underlines that fundraising needs to be a long-term and on-going activity, if support from donors is to be improved. The report also highlights that leadership, a clear institution’s identity, and the alignment of the institution’s mission with the interests of the donors are important factors to obtain and secure philanthropic funds.
