This recently released report proposes that faculty governing bodies should have greater authority over the principles regulating outside funding and over the disposition of inventions derived from faculty research. It specifies and underlines the responsibilities that come with outside funding, including public disclosure of all financial conflicts of interest. The report begins with a summary of recommendations that higher education institutions should adopt in their governing and advisory documents, as well as contracts with outside funders. The authors then analyse the history and the current state of engagement between industry and the academe before concluding with a detailed discussion of each of the recommendations and guidelines outlined in the beginning.
