Paying the professoriate: A global comparison of compensation and contracts

Altbach, P. et al., Paying the professoriate: A global comparison of compensation and contracts. Routledge, New York 2012. ISBN: 978-0-89807-2. Pages: 370.

This publication provides the first comparative analysis of global faculty salaries, remuneration, and terms of employment. Paying the professoriate offers an in-depth international comparison of academic salaries in 28 countries across public, private, research, and non-research universities. Top researchers on the academic profession worldwide have analysed common themes, trends, and the impact of these matters on academic quality and research productivity.

An intriguing part of the study considered average salaries for academics in full-time permanent positions, adjusted to reflect the cost of living in each country. Scholars in Canada came out on top, followed by Italy, South Africa, India, the United States, Saudi Arabia and the UK. The lowest paid were academics in Armenia, with their colleagues in Russia and China only slightly better off.
