New President of the European Research Council

This month, the French mathematician Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, who is currently Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Paris, has been appointed new President of the European Research Council (ERC). He will succeed Helga Nowotny, Professor emeritus of Social Studies of Science at ETH Zürich, who had been a founding member of the ERC and had been in office since 2010.

Officially taking over his role as a President on 1 January 2014, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon will join the ERC at a crucial moment, as this coincides with the inception of the new EU funding programme for research and innovation Horizon 2020. The ERC President’s seat will now be based in Brussels and will coordinate the work of the ERC and will be responsible for its representation.
