‘’New Horizons” research about student motivations

IDP Connect, in its capacity of supporting HEIs, has been addressing key challenges in higher education by unlocking the full potential of data and intelligence. Their ‘’New Horizons” research aims to arm the higher education sector, institutions and policy makers with the data and insight needed to drive the post-pandemic rebound in international and overseas student recruitment.

The global survey summary, released at this year’s Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) has highlighted certain trends about students, when it comes to their preferences for full time study overseas experiences:

  • 79% of students are only considering overseas on-campus options.
  • 18% of students surveyed were comfortable commencing their studies online provided there was a pathway for on-campus learning.
  • Only 10% of respondents would consider a complete online-only study option.

Among the findings of the research, the main motivational driver for students was their future career opportunities, while the factors that drove their decision of where and what to study were financially driven. Migration incentives and post-study work rights were also identified as important influences on their decision.

Based on these empirical findings, it is clear that students are committed to traditional modes of studying, when it comes to gaining an overseas qualification. Countries and institutions that can communicate the clear added value of what they offer may grow in popularity in the post-Covid era.
