The sixth European Union (EU) - African Union (AU) Summit, held in Brussels on 17 and 18 February 2022, resulted in a joint vision of an expanded cooperation and renewed partnership, promoting solidarity, security, peace and sustainable economic development both in Europe and in Africa.
The leaders attending the Summit announced a EUR 150 billion Africa-Europe Investment Package, composed of health and education investment programmes and several joint actions that will support a common ambition for 2030. Investing in inclusive and equitable quality education will be a main goal that will be achieved by improving policy and legal frameworks, access to education, and teacher training, while ensuring safe delivery of education services and tackling learning gaps resulting from the pandemic.
These outcomes come on top of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda, which was agreed by senior AU and EU officials and published as a working document, on 14 February, aiming to strengthen research cooperation between the two continents.
The Summit opens up new avenues for a more strategic cooperation in the field of education and research, while complementing existing opportunities under EU funded programmes, such as Erasmus+, for which ‑Africa is one of the priority regions, and Horizon Europe which funds research and innovation projects with African partners
