The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has announced the launch of a new initiative titled “Researchers at Risk”, aimed at supporting scholars who are unable to continue their academic work in their home countries due to war, persecution, or other threats to their safety. This important programme reflects Poland’s commitment to academic freedom, international solidarity, and the protection of intellectual potential in times of crisis.
Through this initiative, Polish universities and research institutions will be able to host researchers at risk, offering them the opportunity to continue their academic careers in a safe and supportive environment. The programme is open to researchers of all nationalities and fields of study, and includes funding for academic stays of 6 to 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
“Researchers at Risk” not only provides individual support to scholars facing urgent threats, but also contributes to the internationalisation of Polish science by fostering long-term cooperation with institutions and researchers from affected regions.
By launching this program, NAWA is joining a growing network of global efforts that recognise the vital role of displaced academics and the importance of protecting the continuity of research in the face of global instability. The "Researchers at Risk" programme not only offers critical support to individuals in danger, but also enriches the Polish academic landscape by fostering diversity, resilience, and international dialogue.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until 15 December 2025 3:00 p.m.
