Movetia statistics on mobility

Movetia, the Swiss national agency promoting and supporting exchange, mobility, and cooperation activities in all education sectors, has inaugurated its newest website, a platform dedicated to statistics about mobilities. This new platform, stat.movetia.ch, enables a search by location, programme or level of education for all activities supported by the agency.

Overall, the pandemic has had a severe impact on the number of mobilities carried out via the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). A decrease of -38% between 2018 and 2020 has been noted across all types of outgoing and incoming mobilities. Despite the discouraging conditions students were facing in 2020 and 2021, a total of 5,565 exchanges (OUT and IN) were realised. Mobility for study purposes remained the most successful type (80%). However, many students still had to either cancel their study or work placements abroad or show flexibility in adapting to online courses or shortened stays in the host country. In addition, mobility of higher education staff was the most affected given that only 137 mobilities were completed (OUT and IN). The top 3 host countries for outgoing mobility from Switzerland were Germany, France and Spain.

For the ongoing 2021 financing period, the number of approved physical mobilities has more than doubled since last year, reaching 11,548. These numbers are comparable to the pre-pandemic times and show a quick comeback. They are also proof of the continued interest in going abroad for educational purposes, a fact about which the SEMP team is very enthusiastic.
