Market forces, government agency and key disciplines: learning from international experience

Middlehurst, R., Woodfield, S., & Curtis, G. Market forces, government agency and key disciplines: learning from international experience. A report to HEFCE by Curtis+Cartwright Consulting Ltd, Surrey, 2012. Pages: 96.

This publication presents the results of research aiming to explore how countries/states with similar higher education funding and student finance systems to England have identified and dealt with risks towards specific subjects and skills and which policies have, consequently, been enacted. Eleven countries/states were included in this analysis (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Scotland and the United States). The main results indicate a diversified picture across the countries/states considered relating to the strategies used to support subjects and skills of strategic importance, type of evidence used by governments to support decisions and interventions, or funding and fee systems, among other areas.
