Kenya and Zimbabwe close universities

University World News 11 of this month reports that Kenyan universities have been closed for some time because of the unrest in the country. Kenyatta University is the first public university to open again since the post-election crisis, but the security measures have been beefed up and meetings and counseling have been planned.

In Zimbabwe the government has ordered public higher education to close its doors until after the election on 29 March. There was a student demonstration in Bulawayo in January protesting the lowering of educational standards and the announcement by the minister of higher education that students at universities would all have to learn Chinese language and history. It seems the new connections with China do not come without costs.
