Effective July 2011, Jo Beall steps into the role of director of Education & Society at the British Council. In this capacity, Beall will oversee a team of specialists who manage and direct a range of the Council’s education and society programmes related to higher education.

Her most recent position was deputy vice chancellor at the University of Cape Town, where she led the university’s strategy development and curriculum reform work. Beall holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Natal in South Africa and a doctoral degree in geography from the London School of Economics (LSE). From 2003 – 2006, she served as professor in Development Studies and director of the Development Studies Institute at LSE.
