Rumbley, L., Pacheco, I. and Altbach, P. International comparison of academic salaries: an exploratory story. CIHE - Boston College, 2008. Pages: 83.
This study, carried out by the Boston College Center for International Higher Education (CIHE), compares salary data (in World Bank PPP dollars) from 15 countries and one territory, i.e. Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Palestine.
The paper compares salaries at three levels: at the entry points to the academic profession, at the highest level of the academic salary ladder, and in terms of national averages. Looking beyond salary data, the study also focuses on purchasing power parity and key income benchmarks amongst other components. Findings are also measured to the target countries' relative positions on the Human Development Index (HDI) of the United Nations Development Program for comparative analysis.
