International Comparative Performance of the Welsh Research Base 2013

Higher Education Funding Council for Wales/Welsh Government/Elsevier. International Comparative Performance of the Welsh Research Base 2013. 2014. Pages: 64.

Commissioned by the Welsh government and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, the Elsevier report examines the research performance of Welsh universities and research centres. The report operates strongly with bibliometrical data and offers an in-depth citation frequency analysis. In addition, aspects of internationalisation in research such as research mobility and cooperation with other countries and UK regions are strongly taken into account. Comparisons are notably drawn between Wales and other similarly-sized countries, however, in relative terms Wales does not need to fear the comparison with other larger research focused nations. With a citation percentage of 84 % between 2007 and 2011 and a global share of highly cited articles of 0.7 %, Wales scores exceptionally well. Yet, by focusing on publications output the publication can only provide a limited picture of Wales’ state of affairs in internationalisation. The first international conference at the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (Welsh National College), a public institution established by the Welsh government to foster cooperation among Welsh universities and Welsh medium provision in higher education, will offer an opportunity to find out more about developments in the higher education sector in Wales.
