International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base – 2013

Elsevier/UK Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base – 2013. 2013. Pages: 120.

Commissioned by the UK Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and prepared by the academic publishing company Elsevier, this report aims at assessing the UK’s position as a research base in comparison to other research-intensive countries (Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, USA) as well as other growing nations (Brazil, India, Russia). Largely based on data derived from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on research & development expenditure and human capital, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on patents and Elsevier’s database of peer-reviewed SCOPUS, the report gives an overview on research developments concerning patents, citations, articles published, and the Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD). A strong focus is put on the latter as a general form of research input and set in comparison with regard to funding sources (business, higher education, government, etc.) and the situation in other countries. An equally important part is dedicated to human capital such as number of researchers, PhD graduates, and international research mobility and collaboration as such. An interesting report which despite its focus on the UK does not fall short of providing useful information on the other countries put in comparison.
