Intercultural competence for all: Preparation for living in a heterogeneous world

Huber, J. (Ed.) Intercultural competence for all: Preparation for living in a heterogeneous world. Council of Europe, Strasbourg, 2012. ISBN: 978-92-871-7356-0. Pages: 121.

Intercultural competence for all is a compilation of essays on the importance of the development of intercultural competence as a crucial component of mainstream education across all levels. Although a good portion of the contributions are related to pre-tertiary education, it provides a useful starting point for discussions on the role of intercultural development as a valuable learning outcome in higher education as well. The first chapter draws together the discourse around the different dimensions and includes a lengthy list of personal indicators that can be used in practice. In their main conclusion, the authors stress that ultimately, in order for the concept to be successful, intercultural competence needs to be incorporated into the core of education policies.
