The annual Innovation Union Scoreboard provides a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of the EU Member States and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems.

The results of the Scoreboard, published in early March, show that in comparison to the US or Japan, there is an overall progress in the EU in terms of innovation performance and investment in research and innovation. However, the data also show that the innovation gap among EU member states is worsening and one fifth of the countries are performing worse than before. 

This year the Innovation Union Scoreboard is accompanied by the Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2014 that provides a comparative assessment of innovation performance across 190 regions of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland.
