Funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, under Horizon Europe, the European Commission announced an increased support of EUR 10 million for the MSCA4Ukraine initiative in April 2024. With a total of 125 displaced researchers having had the opportunity to work and train in 21 countries as of 2023, the additional budget will allow approximately 50 new researchers to securely continue their work within academia, businesses, public institutions and research centers within the EU and countries that are associated with Horizon Europe.  

Organisations will receive specific support to facilitate the process of hosting researchers for periods ranging from eight months to two years, with the scheme offering training; skills and opportunities for career development; excellent employment conditions, and supervision. Additionally, a special needs allowance and family allowances will be provided to assist selected researchers.  

The initiative allows the fellows to develop joint projects, conduct research placements and fieldwork. Maintaining links with research and innovation communities in Ukraine is encouraged, simultaneously strengthening collaboration between research communities in Ukraine and the European Union. When circumstances allow, the scheme will also facilitate the return of selected researchers to Ukraine, contributing to safeguarding and enhancing the nation’s research and innovation capacity, supporting its long-term success.  

The next call is open between 5 August and 5 September 2024, via the MSCA4Ukraine website and the call documents are available for interested researchers and hosting organisations. The selected researchers will commence their fellowships in early 2025, with the opportunity of initiating new projects or continuing on previous work, focusing on research topics of their preference, including matters directly related to the recovery of Ukraine.
