Increase in international students staying in the Netherlands post-graduation

A new study by Nuffic, covering the period 2013–2022, shows that more international graduates are staying in the Netherlands after completing their studies. Five years after graduation, 25.3% of international students were still living in the Netherlands, up from 24.1% in the previous study conducted in 2022.

The study, based on nationally registered data also shows that 57% of the international students who graduated in 2023 were still in the Netherlands one year later, a significant increase compared to the 40% of the 2018 cohort.

There are considerable variations in stay rates by academic background, country of origin, and city of graduation. Graduates who obtained both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Netherlands are more likely to stay long term. Among this group, 30% still live in the country five years later.

Stay rates also differ by institution location. International graduates from Eindhoven have the highest five-year stay rate at 49%, followed by Delft (39%) and Utrecht (37%). Maastricht has the lowest stay rate at 12%, though many alumni reportedly continue living nearby across the border. After five years, the largest share of international graduates are located in the Greater Amsterdam region.

The top five countries of origin with the highest five-year stay rate include Suriname (80%), Iran (71%), Ukraine (58%), Turkey (52%), and Russia (50%). No country from the European Economic Area is represented in this top five. Language familiarity and existing communities in the Netherlands are considered contributing factors.

Among those who remain, 80% are employed, with many earning above €65,000 per year. Labour market opportunities are cited as a key reason for remaining in the Netherlands, particularly in sectors with skilled worker shortages such as education and technology.
