In late April 2016, Dr. Rolf Hoffman passed away.  This outstanding personality had been for decades one of Europe’s leading internationalists.

Over the last 12 years, Rolf Hoffmann had been the Director of the German-American Fulbright Commission, with responsibility for all Fulbright exchanges between Germany and the US. The US had already played an important role in earlier phases of this committed Atlanticist’s life. He earned his Ph.D. in zoology and behavioral science at Duke University in North Carolina and he ran, in the mid-90s, for his long-term employer DAAD, their New York City Office. But many remember him also as DAAD’s Director for global higher education marketing and, earlier, as the DAAD’s Director of the ‘northern hemisphere’.  His first post in the area of international higher education was, however, with Germany’s Humboldt Foundation.  

Rolf Hoffmann was born in Cologne and always kept the joie de vivre typical of this breed. Like many Rhinelanders, he loved carnival. He was married to Dr. Renate Förg, a lovely Swabian zoologist, with whom he had two sons.

ACA has lost a key advisor and a frequent speaker at its seminars and conferences. ACA also lost a very dear friend.
