Gao, L. Impacts of cultural capital on student college choice in China. Lexington Books, Lanham, 2011. ISBN: 978-0-7391-3441-2. Pages: 224.
The factors that influence patterns of attendance in higher education, and the degree to which it is accessible for all students regardless of their socio-economic background, are fundamental components of many discussions of the ‘social dimension’ of higher education. These issues are highly relevant for China, which aims to improve the quality and accessibility of its higher education offer for its citizens. Relying on a comprehensive analysis of how students' college choice process varies by social class in China, this book presents several case studies of high schools in China and a comprehensive cross case overview. This publication reflects on limitations and broad implications of college choice by Chinese students and thus contributes to a better understanding of impacts of a variety of socio-economic and cultural factors on higher education opportunities in China.
