The IIE White Paper - "Expanding Education Abroad at US Community Colleges" represents the third publication of the study abroad policy research series on Meeting America's Global Education Challenge. As the title implies, it focuses on an institutional type unique to the US higher education system: the community college. Education abroad at community colleges has several key characteristics that distinguish it from education abroad at four-year institutions, and these differences necessitate a distinct approach to expanding study abroad opportunities for community college students.

This report provides an overview of education abroad at community colleges, including current trends in study abroad, the challenges in expanding study abroad and recommendations for institutional reform.

The White Paper draws on a special analysis of data from IIE's Open Doors Report and on findings from a special survey conducted among community colleges in the spring of 2008.
