On 2 July 2019, the European Commission announced how it will spend the last and biggest annual tranche – EUR 11 billion - of the EU research and innovation funding programme Horizon 2020 in the final year of the programme (see Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018 - 2020). The focus will be on the Commission's political priorities, on enhancing international cooperation and on the following topics:
The budget plan will also be used to pave the way for Horizon Europe, the next framework programme (2021-2027) for research and innovation, which will introduce an important element, the European Innovation Council.
On 28 June 2019, the Commission has launched an online consultation as part of the Horizon Europe co-design process on how the programme should be developed and implemented through the strategic plan 2021-2024. Consultations will remain open until 8 September 2019.
On 4 July 2019, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas officially launched the work on five major European research and innovation missions that will be one of the main novelties of the programme Horizon Europe. The five missions’ boards will be chaired by outstanding experts in the areas of climate change, cancer, oceans, soil and smart cities.
