The US Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) has published a new book, Global Perspectives on Measuring Quality: Proceedings of the 2010 Strategic Leaders Global Summit on Graduate Education. The summit took place in Australia in September 2010 (see ACA Newsletter – Education Europe, September 2010) and brought together representatives from 17 different countries at the level of deans and other leaders of graduate schools, representatives of national and international organizations devoted to graduate education, as well as a number of government officials with oversight for the quality of graduate education in their countries. The publication consists of 43 essays by summit participants and captures perspectives from all 17 of the countries represented at the 2010 gathering. The work examines the benefits and challenges of assessing the quality of master’s and doctoral programmes in different global regions while highlighting international best practices in measuring quality. Among other key topics, the authors address the core issue of defining quality in graduate education. They also provide insight into more narrowly defined considerations, such as approaches to assessing and improving quality in recruitment and retention of graduate students, mentoring and supervision, and the development of professional skills.
