On 19 July 2019, 11 German universities and university associations were selected in the framework of the “Excellence Strategy” programme, under the “Universities of Excellence” funding line. The ACA Newsletter Education Europe has often covered the developments related to the Germany’s Excellence Initiative (Exzellenzinitiative), first, and Excellence Strategy (Exzellenzstrategie), later (see for instance November 2017 and September 2018).
The Excellence Strategy, funded by the German Federal Government and the Länder, aims at enabling scientific excellence in research, strengthening collaboration between universities and non-university partners and enhancing the international networks of German higher education institutions (HEIs). It is composed of two funding lines: the Excellence Clusters and the Universities of Excellence. The Excellence Clusters provide “project-based funding in internationally competitive fields of research at individual universities or university alliances”, while the Universities of Excellence “set out to strengthen individual universities or university alliances as an institution and to expand their leading international position in research”.
This time, 17 universities and 2 university associations had applied for the University of Excellence funding and, among those, the 11 selected universities are:
The funding they are expected to receive varies between EUR 10 and 28 million per year, of a total of EUR 148 million per year envisaged by the Excellence Universities funding line of the programme. Three-quarters of these funds come from the federal government and one-quarter from the state in which the universities are based. Individual universities and university alliances will start receiving funding on 1 November 2019, for at least seven years.
