German higher education: anchoring the qualification of refugees as a permanent task

On the occasion of World Refugee Day on 20th of June, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) highlights the success of German higher education institutions in qualifying and integrating refugees. Around 30,000 refugees are currently enrolled in specialised studies, several thousand of them have achieved a Master's degree. DAAD President Mukherjee therefore appeals to politicians to anchor the qualification of refugees as a permanent task in the German higher education system.

With funding received from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, DAAD has launched several programmes for the qualification and integration of refugees: "Integra" gives refugees, who are capable of studying at German universities, the opportunity to prepare specifically for university studies. "Welcome" promotes student initiatives that support refugees in their integration into higher education. The "PROFI" funding programme is aimed at refugee academics who want to expand their professional skills for a better start of their career in Germany.
