On 3 July 2023, the European Commission unveiled the selection results of the recent Erasmus+ call for European Universities alliances. 30 alliances were selected under the 2023 Erasmus+ call, further supporting the rollout of the European Universities Initiative. Amongst the selected alliances, 23 out of 24 are second round applicants (first successful application in 2020) who sought follow-up funding while seven are new alliances.
Including the 20 selected in 2022, there are to date 50 European Universities alliances, involving over 430 higher education institutions, on the road to reach the European Commission's target of 60 European Universities alliances involving 500+ higher education institutions by mid 2024. With a record budget of EUR 402.2 million under the 2021-2027 Erasmus+ programme, including EUR 3.2 million from the Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA III), the programme now also supports the participation of higher education institutions from the Western Balkans, not associated to the Erasmus+ programme. Moreover, as of last year alliances can involve higher education institutions from Bologna Process countries as associated partners. Under the 2023 call, nearly 30 higher education institutions from Ukraine have joined the alliances.
In the 2023 selection, German universities are in the lead with 29 participations, closely followed by Spain (27) and Italy (20). This demonstrates that the involvement of universities from ACA member countries in alliances is significant and reflects the collaborative spirit and shared vision of higher education in Europe.
