The National Unions of Students in Europe (ESIB), an umbrella organisation gathering 47 national student unions from 36 countries, is celebrating 25th year of uniting students across Europe. In honour of this occasion, it was decided that ESIB would change its name to be more reflective of its current goals.

The organisation is noteworthy as it is an active member of the Bologna Process follow-up group and is present across the spectrum of European Higher Education policy-making. Founded in 1982, the ESIB was initially the Western European Students' Information Bureau (WESIB). It soon dropped the ‘Western’ in search of a more inclusive European platform. This time it was decided to change ESIB into the European Students' Union (ESU) in order to point out the added value of promoting educational, social, economic and cultural interests of students at a European level.

The ESU plans to continue to be a strong voice for students during European and international policy making in higher education.
