EUA BRIEFING - University Mergers in Europe (April 2019)

This brief presents the trends and developments concerning institutional mergers and clustering in the European higher education sector since 2000. Data was collected through the University Merger Tool which was launched in 2015 by the European University Association (EUA). The brief explores around 130 cases of university mergers in Europe and tries to identify different patterns across the continent, with a special focus on France, Lithuania and Greece. In France, “institutional clustering is also prompting intra-cluster mergers”; in Lithuania, at least three mergers are planned for the coming year; and in Greece all technological educational institutes will most likely be merged into universities by 2020.
