On 21 May new Director General, Mr Sveinung Skule, was appointed for the new Directorate for Higher Education and Skills that Diku will merge into as from 1 July 2021. The new directorate will consist of the Directorate for Internationalization and Quality Development in Higher Education (Diku), Competence Norway, and parts of the Directorate for ICT and joint services in higher education and research unit. Universal, today affiliated with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, will also be part of the directorate. The head office will be in Bergen, with offices in Oslo, Trondheim and Tromsø.

Mr Sveinung Skule comes from the position as Director General in Skills Norway. He has a doctorate in industrial economics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has been a researcher at the research foundation Fafo, research director at Oslo University College, and in the period 2010 - 2020 he headed the Nordic Institute for Studies of Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU).
