On 28 March 2025, the European Commission adopted the 2025–2027 work programme for the Digital Europe Programme (for more details, see ACA Newsletter – Education Europe, November 2021). Under this work programme, EUR 1.3 billion is allocated to support the deployment of strategic technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud services, and advanced digital skills. This funding is aimed at boosting the use of generative AI across sectors, strengthening cyber resilience, and supporting the expansion of the Destination Earth climate model.
Higher education institutions and training providers are central to the programme’s skills agenda. A dedicated call on Advanced Digital Skills (DIGITAL-2025-SKILLS-08) supports the creation of sectoral digital skills academies; three specialised academies are foreseen in Quantum Technologies, Generative AI, and Virtual Worlds. These will deliver full academic curricula and short-term training at European level, foster collaboration with industry and research institutions, and offer practical learning opportunities through bootcamps, internships, and hands-on access to emerging technologies. Activities will address the needs of diverse learners, including underrepresented groups, and include “Teach-the-Teacher” training for university, VET and secondary-education teachers.
In parallel, other Digital Europe calls include support for the AI Continent (DIGITAL-2025-AI-08), promoting uptake of AI across sectors; European Digital Innovation Hubs (DIGITAL-2025-EDIH-AC-08), offering technical expertise and training; and Accelerating the Best Use of Technologies (DIGITAL-2025-BESTUSE-08).
These first calls for proposals were published in April 2025, with further opportunities throughout the year. Applicants are encouraged to consult the Funding and Tender Opportunities Portal for details on open calls and application procedures.
