Decolonising the university: The emerging quest for non-Eurocentric paradigms

Alvares, C., & Faruqi, S. S. Decolonising the university: The emerging quest for non-Eurocentric paradigms. Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang, 2012. ISBN: 978-983-861-541-9. Pages: 450.

This book of essays is a result of the “International Conference on Decolonising Our Universities”, which was held in Penang, Malaysia, in June 2011. The participants of this conference shared their critical thoughts on how the ‘Western’ model of higher education dominates higher education landscapes in Asia and Africa, while the universities in these regions tend largely to emulate European universities, European curricula and European paradigms. In the resulting conference volume, authors from India, Malaysia, Philippines, Turkey and  Uganda (amongst other countries in Asia and the Pacific) present their vision of how the problem of “intellectual enslavement in Asian and African citadels of learning” can be overcome and suggest alternative pathways and solutions for the development of higher education in these countries.
